# What is an Irrigation Unit?

An Irrigation Unit is an area that is part of your water account. You can create irrigation units by drawing their boundaries on the map or simply by specifying their area.

> ℹ️ Irrigation units will not be shown on the map if you have not specified their boundaries.

# What is a Planting?

A Planting is an association between an **Irrigation Unit**, a Crop Type, and a period of time. Plantings are used to specify what crops are planted in an irrigation unit and what stage of development the crops have reached. 

This information can be used during [ordering](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/CC/pages/1914634353/Orders#Creating-an-Order-with-Crops-and-Plantings) to specify which how much water is allocated to each crop.
